FAB focuses on ‘green energy’

FAB is putting the environment first with its drive to use more “green energy,” cut down on energy consumption and improve waste water treatment.

ASSA ABLOY Group company FAB, based in the Czech Republic, wants to support the production of “green energy” and has set itself the target of buying 10 percent of its electricity from renewable resources in 2007.
Tomáš Hynek, FAB’s Quality and Environmental Manager, says: “It is possible to buy ‘green energy’ from our current electricity supplier for about 5 percent more than the cost of ‘non-green’ energy. By doing this, we are actively supporting the ASSA ABLOY climate strategy and improvements.
The company is also seeing the benefit of the energy-saving program it started a few years ago with an energy audit of the entire organization. Corrective actions were taken on the basis of the audit results – such as roof insulation, changing windows and installing chimney pots.
Tomáš says: “Energy-saving actions taken since the audit have reduced our energy consumption for heating by about 9 percent. Based on standard hours, the reduction is even higher, 23 percent..”
Waste water treatment is also high on FAB’s environmental agenda. The company aims to decrease the amount of chemicals and heavy metals (especially soluble inorganic salt, zinc, nickel and copper) that end up in waste water as a result of the electroplating process. Waste water treatment (WWT) is to be updated with technology for second-degree water purification, and the results will enable FAB to meet tougher emission limits in the future.
“This is closely tied to new projects at FAB because new WWT equipment will make an additional production capacity increase possible,” Tomáš says.
FAB also aims to finish the process it started in 2006 regarding the IPPC (Integrated Pollution and Prevention Control) permit. This mandatory permit is about minimizing pollution from various industrial sources in Europe (European directive 96/61/EC). IPPC will replace the many environmental protection licenses FAB currently holds for its electroplating process.
